Strategic Analysis
Introduction
Analysing the strategy is an important first step in formulating and implementing strategies and also the corresponding operations and tactics in the organisation. Strategic analysis involves using several popular techniques and concepts, that cut across various industries, domains and verticals.
A key aspect to note is that we need to look both inside as well as outside the organisation's boundaries to understand the various factors at play. At a broad level, the techniques can be classified into three categories as internal, external and consolidation.
Let's have a look at the techniques that form part of these broad categories:
- Internal - Resource Audit, MOST Analysis, Boston box/Portfolio analysis
- External - PESTLE Analysis, Porter's 5 Forces
- Consolidation - McKinsey's 7-S model, Balanced Business Scorecard
Scope
Some techniques are internal to the organisation, some are external whereas some other help with consolidation of the insights from both.
Purpose
To help understand the internal capabilities and external factors that have an impact on the organisation.
