Business Analyst - Key Facets and Coverage Areas
Introduction
Business analysis involves a wide array of facets and coverage areas that go beyond merely capturing the requirements. A typical BA is said to be comprising a "T" model skills i.e., a combination of vertical and horizontal competencies.
A business analyst needs the breadth of knowledge and expertise across the multiple related domains and just enough depth in a given area or topic. Because the BA focuses on the problem space, they need a mile wide- inch deep approach. This is different from the mile deep- inch wide approach required for other professionals focusing on the solution domain.
Scope
Applies to strategic programmes, product development projects as well as change management initiatives.
Purpose
Understanding the BA coverage areas helps with setting the correct role, responsibilities and expectations in an organisation.
