Systems Thinking with Holistic View
Introduction
One of the most important facets and skills required for Business Analysts nowadays is the ability to view the situations from several perspectives. Systems thinking helps look at the projects, initiatives, products and scenarios holistically i.e., many dimensions and view points.
The holistic perspectives can broadly be grouped into the following categories:
- People - Customers, users, colleagues, management, suppliers, shareholders and other key stakeholders
- Organisation - Structure, hierarchy, job roles, work culture
- Process - Activities, tasks and work flows for internal efficiencies
- Product - Offerings of the organisation in the form of products/services
- Business - Domain expertise, functional skills and subject matter expertise
- Technology - Platforms, Information Technology systems, networks and applications
Scope
As a business analyst, it is imperative to consider several perspectives - soft and hard, for taking the correct decisions. These come from considering all the facts, get insights from data, understand the opinions of people involved.
Purpose
Using Systems Thinking and applying the holistic views enables us to gather the insights quickly and effortlessly. These in turn lead to optimal performance and effective outputs.
